Fruits of this group are distinguished by a very small size, comparable to that of a thumb. They have a dark purple, almost black color, thin tender skin, and flesh with almost no seeds.
Due to the absence of bitterness and a specific texture, the fruits are traditionally used for home cooking and pickling, in particular for brining in rice bran nukazuke. The name is a fruit-type category; therefore, specific agronomic characteristics for it are not defined.
