The hybrid was intended for grain use. In field trials of that period, the productivity of the variety was about 5400 pounds per acre, and the index of panicle exsertion above the flag leaf was rated as high.

Studies of the biochemical composition of D-55 grain were conducted in the context of examining the ratio of protein fractions, in particular prolamins and kafirins. Susceptibility of the plant to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita was also recorded.
