The variety was developed by Northrup King & Co. In the mid-20th century, it was actively used in international research and breeding, including serving as the basis for the creation of the parent line 120 A in Bulgaria and being applied in breeding work in the USSR and Ukraine.

In publications of the 1960s, NK 120 was classified as a short-stalked variety. In studies of that period, it was evaluated for plant height, tillering, 100-seed weight, and grain yield. Currently, the variety has transitioned into the category of breeding material and is not an independent market product.
