The leaves of young plants have a distinct arrow shape, which may become more complex as the shoots grow. The leaf color is typically dark green with white or cream veins; the leaf blade may darken over time.

The plant features climbing or trailing shoots. When using a support, it can reach a height of 1.5 meters; it can also be grown as an ampelous crop. The plant's tissues contain calcium oxalate crystals, making it toxic if ingested.
