The variety was bred in Switzerland based on local genetic material known as "Bernese clover" (Mattenklee). It has become an important breeding resource, the genetics of which were used in the development of other clover varieties.

The plant is of a perennial type. The variety shows high resistance to root rot and stele necrosis, and is also characterized by good persistence in the sward. Due to its hardiness, it is adapted to the conditions of Alpine and foothill farming and is used as a standard in forage quality testing.
