The variety Topas was developed by the breeding company Lochow-Petkus GmbH. Genetic studies indicate that it was obtained as a result of crossing the varieties Herz Freya and Kristall.

The variety appeared in official variety lists, in particular in the Danish variety list in the period from the 1980s to the early 2000s. It is intended for use for fodder purposes as a protein source for animals or within the framework of agrotechnical crop rotations.

Given that the variety is a product of past breeding, modern data on maturity group, exact plant height, and detailed disease resistance are practically absent in open sources.
