The variety became the first successful spring faba bean variety in the NPZ breeding line and gained widespread distribution in the 1980s, particularly in the UK. Its key advantage at the time of introduction was the combination of early maturity with high plant stability.
Unlike the long-stemmed and late-maturing varieties traditional for that time, Troy possesses a more compact form. To achieve these agronomic indicators, breeding involved crosses with short-stemmed forms, including the use of genetic material from garden beans.
