Carballeira is a variety of maize traditionally grown by farmers in the Spanish province of Pontevedra. This variety belongs to the category of cross-pollinating plants and is the subject of scientific research on issues of adaptation to stress factors, including drought and high temperatures.
A distinctive morphological feature of this landrace is the characteristic coloration of the kernels, which are dark purple or black in color. The variety is under the stewardship and study of the Misión Biológica de Galicia, which is part of the structure of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
