The line was derived by the pedigree method through self-pollination and selection over eight generations from a single cross (848 x 595). It is proprietary material and is widely known as a significant component in the genealogy of U.S. commercial corn hybrids.
Regarding pathogens, the line exhibits resistance to Stewart's bacterial wilt and Fusarium ear rot, and also possesses intermediate to high resistance to a number of leaf blights. PHG 84 has been used as a component for the development of other breeding lines.
