Population LACAUNE is a landrace adapted to high-altitude conditions and cool climates. This population is an important genetic resource and is registered in the French catalogue as a conservation variety, not for intensive mass production.
The variety belongs to the flint type (Flint). Due to long-term traditional selection in cool mountainous areas, the population possesses traits of cold tolerance and earliness, as well as adaptation to high-density planting and local stress factors.
The population played a key role in European maize breeding, serving as a base for creating significant F2 and F7 inbred lines, which allowed the crop to be advanced into the northern regions of France.
