The variety is a tall plant, reaching a height of 1.5 to 3 meters. It is a late-maturing variety with a growing period lasting from 90 to 120 days. The crop is distinguished by high hardiness and is well-adapted to hot, arid conditions and poor soils.

The kernels have a deep blue or blue-black color, contain a high level of anthocyanins and an increased amount of protein compared to modern hybrids, and have a low glycemic index. It is traditionally used for preparing flour, tortillas, and porridges, and is sometimes consumed at the milk stage of maturity.
