Lines B73 and B84 were developed in the USA as part of a program to create lines of the Stiff Stalk Synthetic group. Line B73 is one of the most significant in the history of maize breeding and serves as a basis for creating numerous commercial hybrids.
The B73 x B84 combination is used in scientific practice as a model object for studying heterosis, gene expression, mapping of plant morphological traits, and analysis of epistatic effects. This combination is not a registered variety, but acts as a tool for fundamental research.
