The variety is a genetically modified maize of the MON 810 line, developed for pest control. In official lists, the variety is classified as belonging to maturity group 600 according to the FAO system.
The variety was intended for commercial use as a grain crop, predominantly in regions with high European corn borer activity. Publications also mention the variations Cuartal CL and Cuartal Waxy, however, their detailed characteristics are absent.
