The line was obtained by crossing lines G50 and PHRH7. It possesses a long and thick ear, as well as specific parameters for the angle of the ear relative to the stalk.
In scientific literature, the line is used as a reference for studying disease resistance, particularly to Fusarium. Compared to a number of other lines, PHR-31 is characterized by higher stalk lodging resistance with lower stalk breakage resistance.
