Tomato Fusarium wilt

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A fungal disease caused by the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, which attacks the vascular system of the plant. It is characterized by wilting and specific browning of the stem vascular bundles.

In the reference 2 983 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of the disease is the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, which is subdivided into three physiological races. The distribution of these races is determined by their ability to overcome the genetic resistance of host cultivars; races 1 and 2 are found worldwide, while the range of race 3 is gradually expanding.

Key symptoms include unilateral yellowing and wilting of leaves, starting from the lower part of the plant, as well as brown or chocolate-brown discoloration of the vascular bundles in a stem cross-section. The disease is most pronounced during the flowering and active fruiting periods, leading to leaf deformation and plant death.

Breeding for resistance is based on the use of the I, I-2, and I-3 genes, which provide protection against the first, second, and third races of the pathogen, respectively. In the documentation for cultivars and hybrids, the presence of such resistance is indicated by the code Fol with the specification of the corresponding races and the level of resistance.
