Heterosis in White Cabbage

Heterosis in cabbage is evaluated by comparing F1 hybrids with parental lines or a standard. Yield, weight, head diameter and density, as well as maturity dates and disease resistance are measured in percentages. Positive heterosis for yield is often 15–30% or higher, providing increased plant uniformity, which is important for mechanized harvesting.

Negative heterosis has agronomic significance when evaluating resistance to black rot (Xanthomonas campestris); values from -18.2% to -34.0% indicate increased resistance to the disease. When studying resistance via hydathodes, values varied from -67.5% to +108.3%, which indicates complex genetic control of the trait.

The use of heterotic hybrids, created based on self-incompatible lines or CMS, increases plant adaptability to adverse environmental conditions and allows for the production of yields suitable for long-term storage and processing. Utilizing this effect allows for shortening the time to reach technical maturity by 5–7 days.
