Heterosis in rye

Secale cereale L.

A tool for increasing rye productivity based on the use of F1 hybrids that exceed population varieties in yield by 15–20%. The effect manifests as enhanced growth and improved morphological traits, but it requires strict adherence to technology and is not maintained in the F2 generation.

Heterosis in rye is evaluated through the combining ability of lines during topcrosses, diallel crosses, and progeny testing. Quantitatively, the effect is expressed as a yield increase of 15–20%, which in variety trials amounts to 8.0 to 14.4 c/ha. Additionally, heterosis is observed in stem height, reaching 31–34.4%, which requires control due to the risk of reduced lodging resistance.

The manifestation of heterosis ensures high productive tillering, crop uniformity, and increased grain number per spike, which contributes to yield growth and harvesting efficiency. The effect is maximal exclusively in the first generation of hybrids, whereas in the F2 generation, there is a sharp decline in productivity and segregation of traits, making the reuse of seed material impossible.
