Ripening group — red currant

Ribes rubrum L.

Red currant varieties are traditionally divided into three main groups: early, ripening from the end of June to the beginning of the second ten-day period of July; mid-season, ripening in the second or third ten-day period of July; and late, ready for harvest at the end of July or the first ten-day period of August, depending on the region.

The ripening group trait is the determining factor for establishing a berry production schedule and planning commercial harvesting. Unlike black currant, red currant berries in a cluster ripen relatively synchronously; however, leaving them on the bush too long is unacceptable due to the risk of shattering and loss of yield quality.
