Container cultivation of Hydrangea paniculata

For container cultivation of Hydrangea paniculata, preference is given to compact and dwarf cultivars such as Bobo, Little Lime, or Little Spooky, as standard forms require significant space for root system development. Plants are planted in containers with a volume of 10 to 30 liters, with mandatory drainage holes and a layer of material to prevent water stagnation. It is important to use nutrient-rich substrates with high aeration and to consider the fragility of ceramic pots, which may crack during winter.

Agrotechnology in containers is characterized by the need for daily moisture monitoring due to the rapid drying of the limited soil volume. Hydrangea paniculata requires regular fertilization and substrate renewal every two to three years. Despite high frost resistance down to –34°C, containers should be placed in wind-protected areas during the winter period. Pruning to shape the crown and stimulate flowering on current-year shoots is carried out in late winter or early spring.
