For successful petunia cultivation, the container volume must strictly correspond to the plant's varietal characteristics. Aggressive trailing forms, such as the 'Tidal' series, require significant space from 30 to 100 liters, whereas 3 to 5 liters per plant is sufficient for bushy and small-flowered series. The limited substrate volume necessitates intensive feeding and moisture control, as nutrient reserves are quickly depleted and the soil is prone to accelerated drying.

Container cultivation involves active management of the plant's appearance through regular shoot pruning to prevent stem exposure and the removal of spent blooms to stimulate new flowering. An important factor is controlling the substrate acidity, as petunias react acutely to pH deviations from the 5.5–6.5 range. When this range is exceeded, the plant often suffers from chlorosis caused by iron deficiency, which is a specific problem inherent to the container growing method.
