Container culture of Scaevola

A critical factor for Scaevola health in limited volumes is drainage quality, as the crop is extremely sensitive to root waterlogging. For planting, it is necessary to use light, peat-based substrates with the addition of sand, avoiding heavy, water-retentive soil mixes that cause chlorosis and root system rot.

The plant possesses an important advantage: the ability to self-clean, which eliminates the need to remove wilted flowers to maintain a tidy appearance. To preserve a decorative shape in hanging baskets and planters, regular pinching of the stems is required to prevent them from becoming excessively leggy.

Scaevola requires intense sunlight for at least 6–8 hours a day; if insufficient, flowering becomes sparse. In container culture, one must also account for the plant's high growth vigor, which can lead to the suppression of neighboring crops in mixed compositions.
