The causative agents of root and stem rots in Scaevola are oomycetes of the genus Pythium, as well as fungi of the genera Fusarium and Verticillium, which cause vascular lesions and general wilting of the plant. Initial symptoms include yellowing and leaf drop while the soil remains moist. As the disease progresses, the roots turn brown or black and become soft, while the stems undergo blackening, leading to sudden collapse and the death of the entire crop.
