Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group
A complex of sugar beet diseases caused by soil-borne fungi and oomycetes that infect the plant at various stages of ontogenesis, from seedling emergence to storage.
In the reference 75 varieties crop Sugar beet, where this is mentioned in the description.
Pathogens of root rots include a wide range of organisms: the oomycetes Pythium ultimum, Pythium debaryanum and Aphanomyces cochlioides, the basidiomycete Rhizoctonia solani, the ascomycete Phoma betae, as well as species of the genus Fusarium (F. oxysporum, F. solani, F. gibbodum, F. javanicum). Pathocomplexes may also include pectolytic bacteria.
Symptoms vary depending on the pathogen: fusarium wilts manifest as necrosis of the central bundle, wilting, and yellowing of the leaves, while rhizoctonia root rot is characterized by dry rot, the formation of brown coating, and the development of a specific brown leaf rosette.
Resistance to root rots is controlled by a family of R-genes, predominantly of the NBS-LRR class, as well as genes of the BvNHX1 and BvNHX5 type. Breeding evaluation of hybrids is conducted primarily according to susceptibility scales, such as the V. N. Shevchenko scale, and results of trials on infection plots.
