Cucumber root rot

Cucumis sativus L.

A complex disease of cucumber caused by pathogenic fungi of the genera Fusarium and Rhizoctonia, as well as oomycetes of the genus Pythium. It leads to the destruction of the root system and plant death.

In the reference 40 varieties crop Cucumber, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease is caused by phytopathogens Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, F. solani, F. culmorum, F. oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum, Rhizoctonia solani, as well as Pythium ultimum, P. debaryanum, and P. aphanidermatum. The pathocomplex may additionally include Ascochyta cucumis and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.

In seedlings, the disease manifests as “damping-off” with stem thinning and browning of the roots. In adult plants, wilting and yellowing of the lower leaves, softening and rotting of the root, and darkening of the vessels are observed. When infected with Fusarium, a white or pinkish mycelium may form on the roots.

No specific resistance genes to root rot have been identified in cucumber. Breeding is being conducted in the direction of ensuring complex resistance through hybrid heterosis and increasing the overall vigor of the root system, while the search for resistance donors continues among wild relatives.
