Raspberry root rots

Rubus idaeus L.

Phytophthora root rot of raspberry, caused by the pathogen Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi, is the most dangerous disease leading to plant death due to the destruction of the root system.

In the reference 55 varieties crop Red raspberry, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary causative agent of the disease is Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi, although species such as P. gonapodyides, P. cryptogea, P. citricola, and P. megasperma may also be found on the crop. No clearly differentiated races of the main raspberry pathogen have been identified to date.

Symptoms of infection include delayed bud break, sudden stem wilting, and leaf chlorosis. During diagnosis, a characteristic boundary is observed on the roots between healthy white tissue and infected reddish-brown tissue, and a 'shepherd's crook' formation occurs when shoot tips wither.

Breeding for resistance relies on the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs), specifically the Rub118b110 marker, as well as the study of immune regulator proteins such as RiABP19. In practice, cultivar resistance is assessed by expert evaluation based on trial results rather than through the designation of specific genes.
