Container Cultivation of Spathiphyllum

For successful cultivation of Spathiphyllum in containers, the choice of pot volume is critical. The plant prefers relatively tight pots, as excessive space stimulates root system development at the expense of generative processes, which slows down or completely stops flowering.

The composition of the substrate is of great importance; it must provide high aeration for the root system while maintaining water-holding capacity. Due to the superficial position of the roots, Spathiphyllum is extremely sensitive to moisture stagnation, which triggers rot, so good drainage and a loose peat-based soil are mandatory for container culture.

Spathiphyllum acts as an indicator crop, with its condition responding quickly to changes in the hydrothermal regime. The main task when growing indoors is to maintain a moisture balance that prevents loss of turgor due to over-drying and rot due to waterlogging.
