Sutera cordata is classified as a 'spiller' type trailing plant, producing pendulous shoots to decorate the edges of containers. A critical factor for successful cultivation is maintaining the substrate in a consistently moderately moist state, similar to a wrung-out sponge. Even short-term drying of the root ball causes mass shedding of buds and flowers, which requires up to two weeks for the plant to regain its decorative qualities.

For cultivation, light peat-based mixes with a high proportion of perlite or vermiculite are preferred, as they provide necessary drainage and prevent root rot. Due to intense flowering in a limited soil volume, Sutera requires regular fertilization every 7–14 days. An important technological advantage of this species is its 'self-cleaning' ability, which eliminates the need for manual removal of spent inflorescences or formative pruning of the plant.
