Sutera cordata requires a consistently moist substrate without drying out or waterlogging. Due to its shallow root system and active transpiration, the plant is extremely sensitive to any form of water stress.

The crop has narrow tolerance thresholds regarding water regime. In case of moisture deficiency, the plant does not enter dormancy but rapidly sheds buds and flowers, followed by wilting and stem necrosis. The soil must be kept moist to a depth of at least 2.5 cm; meanwhile, the shallow and fibrous root system is highly susceptible to root rots under conditions of poor aeration or waterlogging.

The high intensity of transpiration through thin leaves necessitates maintaining a balance between light exposure and humidity. In professional cultivation, sub-irrigation or root-zone watering is recommended to avoid wetting the foliage, and when using hydroponic systems, it is necessary to maintain EC levels at 1.2–1.4 dS/m and pH at 5.8–6.2 to ensure proper nutrient uptake.
