Rapeseed oil content is the mass fraction of crude fat in seeds, which is a key quality indicator determining the economic efficiency of their processing.

In modern rapeseed varieties and hybrids, the oil content reaches 48–50%, while the base standard for industrial procurement is considered to be at least 43% calculated on an absolutely dry matter basis. The fat content in commercial batches usually ranges from 40 to 48%. To accurately determine oil content, the extraction method using a Soxhlet apparatus is applied, as well as rapid methods such as NMR spectroscopy and IR spectrometry.

The oil content trait is directly linked to production economics, as it determines the yield of commercial oil and the procurement price of the raw material. In the biological aspect, there is a positive correlation between seed size and oil content; however, high oil content is often accompanied by a decrease in seed protein content. Rapeseed breeding is aimed at simultaneously increasing this indicator while improving the qualitative composition of fatty acids and reducing the content of anti-nutritional substances.
