Pod shattering in rapeseed is a natural seed dispersal mechanism leading to yield losses of up to 50%. Resistance to this phenomenon is determined by the anatomical structure of the pod suture and the thickness of the pod walls.

In agricultural practice, pod shattering is triggered by drought, strong winds, and sharp fluctuations in humidity during the ripening period. Under normal conditions, losses amount to 8–12% of the yield, however, under adverse factors, they can reach 25–50%, which also creates the problem of field infestation by volunteer plants in subsequent seasons.

To assess resistance, a visual scoring scale from 1 to 9 is used, where 1 indicates maximum losses. Laboratory methods include the Shatter Resistance Index (SRI), the random impact method using ball bearings, and measuring pod valve detachment force with a dynamometer. It has been established that an increase in pod wall thickness is positively correlated with resistance to premature dehiscence.
