Glycine max (L.) Merr.
Premature opening of soybean pod valves, leading to significant seed yield losses reaching up to 99% in susceptible varieties. The trait is genetically determined by the Pdh1 gene locus and minor QTLs, and also depends on weather conditions and the anatomical structure of the pod valves.

To evaluate soybean resistance, a drying oven method is used at 60 °C for 3 hours, recording the degree of valve twisting and opening. Field observations are also conducted to monitor the percentage of shattered pods 5 and 30 days after reaching physiological maturity. Resistant germplasm is capable of maintaining pod integrity at nearly 100% even a month after maturation, whereas susceptible varieties demonstrate losses ranging from 78% to 97%.
The shattering problem is closely linked to humidity fluctuation cycles and delayed harvesting, which induces seed shedding onto the soil. A seed loss of approximately 40 seeds per 1 m² is equivalent to a yield reduction of 0.6–0.7 cwt/ha. In addition to reducing total yield, shattering leads to field infestation with soybean volunteers, which negatively impacts the performance of subsequent crops in the rotation.
