A biological trait of oilseed rape maturation where pod valves lose integrity, leading to premature seed shedding and significant yield losses.

To assess oilseed rape resistance to pod shattering, a visual 9-point scale is used, where 1 point corresponds to minimum resistance and 9 to maximum. Quantitative indicators are also employed: the Shatter Resistance Index (SRI), varying from 0.01 to 0.70, and the percentage of pod shattering, which in resistant forms ranges from 1.5–7%.
In field conditions, losses from pod shattering average 8–12%, however, under adverse weather factors or delayed harvesting, they can reach 50–80%. Resistance correlates with pod wall thickness and the strength of its attachment to the pedicel, while Alternaria infection further provokes dehiscence along the suture.
