For standard sunflower varieties, the standard 1000-seed weight is at least 50-60 g, while for large-seeded varieties, this figure reaches 60 g or more. The value is determined at the actual moisture content of the seed material using laboratory scales.
Large seeds possess an increased supply of nutrients, which promotes the development of a more robust root system and improves field emergence. This indicator is used to convert the target plant stand density into a weight-based seeding rate in kilograms per hectare.
There is a negative correlation between the number of seeds in a head and their weight. Agro-climatic conditions, the level of mineral nutrition, and the phytosanitary state of the crops have a significant influence on the formation of this indicator, determining the final plumpness of the seeds.
