To assess cucumber foliage density, biometric evaluation is used, which includes counting leaves and measuring their area by stem tier, as well as calculating the leaf area index as the ratio of leaf area to the growing area. In variety trials, this trait is recorded using qualitative characteristics, such as weak, medium, or strong degree of vegetative mass development.

The degree of foliage density depends on the cultivar type and growing conditions. Excessive vegetative mass requires mandatory training, including pinching and removal of lateral shoots to prevent over-densification, which impairs light penetration to fruits and increases the risk of diseases. At the same time, the balance between vegetative growth and fruiting is a key indicator of compliance with light and temperature regimes.

Transpiration intensity correlates directly with the degree of foliage density, determining the plant's water requirements. In intensive greenhouse and supplemental lighting conditions, the level of foliage density is optimized to ensure maximum photosynthetic activity without mutual shading of the leaves.
