Powdery mildew of melon

Cucumis melo L.

A fungal disease of melon caused by the pathogens Podosphaera xanthii and Golovinomyces cichoracearum. It is characterized by the appearance of a white powdery coating on leaves and stems, leading to necrosis and premature desiccation.

In the reference 6 varieties crop Melon, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens of the disease belong to the Erysiphaceae family and can infect the crop both individually and simultaneously. Primary symptoms appear as rounded white mycelial spots on leaves, petioles, and stems. As the infection progresses, the coating spreads across the leaf surface, causing chlorosis, subsequent necrosis, and premature desiccation of the foliage, which reduces yield and fruit quality due to the loss of protective leaf cover.

The race structure is most thoroughly studied for Podosphaera xanthii using a standard set of 11 differential melon genotypes. Resistance breeding is based on the use of genes with the Pm prefix, such as Pm-wWMR 29. Modern breeding programs for resistant varieties actively utilize molecular genetic markers for the introgression of these genes into commercial germplasm.
