A fungal disease of triticale caused by the obligate biotroph Blumeria graminis, characterized by the appearance of a white coating on vegetative organs and spikes.

The causal agent of powdery mildew on triticale is the fungus Blumeria graminis, with crop infection often associated with the specialized form f. sp. tritici. A unique feature of the pathogenesis is the ability of triticale to be infected by hybrid strains of the fungus that have emerged from the crossing of forms adapted to wheat and rye.

Symptoms of the disease include the appearance of a white powdery coating on leaves, stems, and spikes, upon which fruiting bodies, known as cleistothecia, eventually form. The accumulation of mycelium reduces the assimilative surface area of the plants, which, under epiphytotic conditions, can lead to yield losses of 10–20%.

Triticale resistance to powdery mildew is provided by Pm genes, often introduced from rye via chromosomes 1R, 4R, 5R, and 6R. In modern breeding, stacking of multiple resistance genes is employed to create varieties capable of withstanding the constantly evolving pathotypes of the fungus.
