Rapeseed lodging

In breeding practice and the state variety testing system, rapeseed lodging resistance is assessed on a 5-point scale. The evaluation is conducted visually before harvest, taking into account the degree of stem inclination and their growth habit. A score of 5 is assigned to plants with high resistance that maintain an upright position, while scores of 1–3 indicate the crop's susceptibility to lodging.

To objectively assess the resistance potential of genotypes, stress-inducing conditions are often used, including high-density sowing or excessive nitrogen fertilizer application. Lodging resistance is determined by the genetic characteristics of the variety, specifically stem morphology and root system development, as well as agrotechnical conditions such as nutrient balance and plant stand density.
