Lodging — soybean

Glycine max (L.) Merr.

An important agronomic and biological trait of soybean, evaluated on a five-point scale to determine a variety's suitability for mechanized harvesting. Resistance depends on the genetic characteristics of the variety, plant density, and mineral nutrition management.

In the reference 455 varieties crop Soybean, where this is mentioned in the description.

Soybean lodging resistance is determined visually using a five-point scale. One point corresponds to full resistance and an upright stem position, whereas five points indicate a total loss of vertical orientation. In breeding, low scores are the target indicator ensuring efficient harvesting.

Lodging is provoked by excessive plant density, leading to the formation of elongated stems, as well as high moisture levels during the period of active growth. Balanced nutrition, particularly adequate potassium supply, strengthens the stem and increases the plants' resistance to lodging.

The primary negative consequence of lodging is high seed loss during combine harvesting due to the difficulty of the header picking up the lodged biomass. Although in rare cases of moderate lodging, an increase in productivity is noted due to better light penetration to the lower leaf layers, the technical difficulties of harvesting make this trait critical when selecting a variety.
