Wireworm larvae cause the main damage to maize at early stages of vegetation. They bore into sown seeds, preventing germination, and also feed on roots and the underground part of the stem. This leads to stunted growth, wilting, and death of young plants.
The damage caused by the pest creates favorable conditions for the penetration of phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria into maize tissues, which causes the development of secondary rots. Specific maize resistance genes to this pest have not yet been identified in modern breeding.
