An important indicator is the ear attachment height from the soil surface, which must be at least 50 cm to ensure high-quality mechanized harvesting by combines without losses.
Quantitative parameters of the ear are genetically determined but are subject to environmental influence. Ear abortion during the initiation period, which occurs at the 8–10 leaf stage, can be caused by temperature stress and lead to the absence of fertile ears and a significant reduction in yield.
