High stay-green values imply the preservation of photosynthetic activity until the grain reaches physiological maturity. This indicator directly affects crop productivity: prolonged photosynthesis contributes to greater dry matter accumulation, and for silage maize, it ensures the maintenance of the nutritional properties of the stover.

Stay-green hybrids often exhibit increased resistance to drought conditions, stalk rots, and lodging. When growing such varieties, particular attention must be paid to monitoring grain moisture at harvest, as the visual retention of a green stem does not always correlate with a decrease in the moisture content of the grain.
