This trait is assessed through a series of phenological observations, including the duration of the fruiting period and the distribution of yield across harvest “waves.” Specialists record the plants' ability to initiate flower stalks over a period of 4–5 months, with productivity measured in grams per plant or tons per hectare, broken down by period.
High remontancy is characterized by a stable marketable yield in the second half of summer and autumn. Meanwhile, “semi-remontant” varieties exhibit repeat flowering only under favorable weather conditions. Neutral-day varieties are characterized by a reallocation of resources toward the formation of generative organs, which leads to reduced runner production.
Intensive fruiting requires regular fertilization due to high nutrient demands. Because of plant exhaustion and the depletion of energy reserves, remontant strawberries are often cultivated as an annual crop in industrial systems, which is also due to the risk of reduced winter hardiness caused by prolonged fruiting until frost.
