Variety traits
Rubus L. subg. Rubus
The ability of blackberry plants to form generative buds and produce yield on current-season canes, known as primocanes. This trait allows for an annual cultivation cycle with complete removal of canes after fruiting.
In the reference 20 varieties crop Blackberry, where this is mentioned in the description.
To evaluate remontancy in breeding, indicators such as the duration of fruiting in days and yield volume in kg per bush or hectare for the autumn period are used. In genetic analysis of the trait, PF1 and PF2 markers are applied, ensuring high accuracy in phenotype prediction. The expression of the trait depends on the plant's ability to produce a marketable yield before the onset of frost, with thermotolerance serving as a limiting factor: temperatures above 35°C damage flowers and reduce berry quality.
The use of primocane-fruiting varieties changes cultivation technology by allowing for the complete mowing of canes to the ground, which eliminates the costs of winter protection and simplifies pathogen control. Depending on the climate, a double-cropping cycle is possible, involving the harvest of berries from overwintered canes of the previous year and primocanes of the current year. The use of these varieties significantly extends the market supply season, shifting it toward late summer and autumn.
