The causal agent of powdery mildew on strawberry is the ascomycete fungus Podosphaera aphanis, referred to in older literature as Sphaerotheca macularis f. sp. fragariae or Oidium fragariae. The pathogen affects all above-ground organs, causing a characteristic curling of the leaf margins inward, which exposes the underside covered in a white mycelial mat. In late stages, necrosis and a bronze tan appear on the tissues, and infected berries become deformed, acquiring a musty flavor.
Resistance of the crop to the disease is a polygenic trait determined by quantitative trait loci (QTLs). The primary locus studied is 08 To-f, for which the DNA markers IB535110 and IB533828 are used for identification. Additionally, MLO susceptibility genes, particularly FaMLO10, FaMLO17, and FaMLO20, play an important role, and their manipulation is considered a promising direction for increasing the resistance of octoploid strawberry cultivars.
