Gray mold — Celosia cristata

Celosia argentea L. var. cristata (L.) Kuntze

A fungal disease of Celosia cristata caused by the pathogen Botrytis cinerea, affecting aerial plant parts under conditions of high humidity.

In the reference 6 varieties crop Cockscomb, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary causative agent of gray mold on Celosia cristata is the fungus Botrytis cinerea, with the possibility of infection by other fungi of the genus Botrytis, particularly Botrytis convoluta, also being noted. The disease affects leaves, stems, and inflorescences, manifesting as discoloration, browning, and subsequent tissue decay.

A characteristic sign of infection under high humidity is the appearance of a gray, fuzzy fungal sporulation layer on the affected areas. In the most vulnerable zones, such as the crested inflorescences and buds, the development of the pathogen leads to their rapid wilting and necrosis.
