The vigor of a variety is manifested in the overall development power of aerial organs, including tillering intensity, shoot length, and the rate of leaf area formation. As a seed characteristic, this indicator reflects the ability of seedlings to develop successfully under actual field conditions by pushing through the soil layer, which distinguishes it from standard laboratory germination.
During variety testing, development intensity is assessed visually or through biometric indicators, such as plant height and crown diameter, in comparison with reference samples. Objectivity of the assessment is achieved only under identical agrotechnical conditions, as the manifestation of this trait depends directly on the availability of nutrients, moisture, temperature, and light to the plants.
Hereditary predisposition to vigor determines the suitability of a variety for specific technologies. Vigorous varieties have an advantage in competition with weeds, while less vigorous forms are preferable for intensive technologies that allow for the use of high-density planting schemes and facilitate mechanized harvesting.
