Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group

The ability of sugar beet to maintain yield and technological quality under the pressure of pathogens, pests, or herbicides without suppressing the infection or stress factor.

For sugar beet, tolerance is assessed by comparing the productivity of different genotypes in fields infested with pathogens, such as the causal agents of Cercospora leaf spot or Rhizoctonia root rot. A key indicator is the stability of sugar yield and root mass under adverse conditions compared to control non-tolerant hybrids.

In evaluating herbicide tolerance, sublethal doses of preparations are used, measuring the percentage of survival and the preservation of plant vegetative mass. There is no single standardized scale for this trait, so breeders use scoring systems for the degree of damage from 1 to 9 or indicators of relative productivity compared to a standard.
