During competitive variety trials, actual grain moisture values are adjusted to a standard level of 14%.
The crop is highly sensitive to limiting factors, particularly moisture availability and soil fertility. The productivity potential of modern varieties under favorable conditions and irrigation can reach 80–120 c/ha, whereas under severe stress conditions, these figures drop to 1–2 c/ha.
An important specificity of durum wheat cultivation is the inverse correlation between yield growth and grain quality characteristics. Breeding work is aimed at achieving high productivity while maintaining the required vitreousness and high protein content for pasta production.
