Septoria tritici blotch — durum wheat

Triticum durum Desf.

A disease of durum wheat caused by a complex of fungi, characterized by increased susceptibility of the crop and the dominance of species of the genus Parastagonospora over Zymoseptoria tritici.

Septoria blotch in durum wheat is caused by a complex of fungi, where Zymoseptoria tritici, Parastagonospora nodorum, and Stagonospora avenae f. sp. triticea play the primary role. Unlike soft wheat, where Z. tritici is universally dominant, the development of pathogens of the genus Parastagonospora is more characteristic for durum wheat.

Disease diagnosis is based on the appearance of light-brown spots with pycnidia on the leaves and infection of the glumes, which leads to shriveled grain. Durum wheat exhibits a higher general susceptibility to this complex of blotches.

Breeding durum wheat for resistance is complicated by the lack of widespread application of classical Stb-genes, which have been studied primarily in soft wheat. The main work is conducted through field screening of collections and the selection of accessions with traits of adult-plant or partial resistance.
