The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Septoria apiicola Speg. The infection affects leaves and petioles, manifesting as small chlorotic spots that eventually grow up to 1 cm in diameter, turning brown with a dark border. A characteristic diagnostic feature is the formation of numerous black dots—pycnidia—in the center of the spots.
Under conditions of high humidity and the presence of leaf wetness, the disease develops rapidly, causing curling, leaf desiccation, and petiole breakage, which creates a 'late blight' effect. The pathogen is capable of persisting on the surface or inside seeds, remaining visually indistinguishable on the planting material.
